In 2010 SLS Design Consultants were appointed by Warburtons to act as civil and structural engineering consultants on the £25m redevelopment of their main bakery situated at their headquarters site in Bolton.
The construction project consisted of the part demolition of a number of existing buildings on the site, which formally housed the main bread making plant, and the reconstruction of new purpose built facilities using multi span steel portal frames for the superstructure.
Due to varying ground conditions, we advised that the foundations for the superstructure columns and the main items of heavy plant would need to be piled. A 7m high, sheet piled retaining wall was installed at the rear of the site to accommodate the sloping nature of the ground and to form a discreet location for housing flour silos and a tank farm.
In order to meet the stringent environmental impact requirements of the Local Authority regarding the local storm water drainage infrastructure, we devised a system to install large, above ground water storage tanks to attenuate rainfall flows on site and control the discharge into the existing sewer system.
Our planning of the construction works accommodated the need to keep the existing office accommodation and dispatch area in use at all times; they provide support for other bakery facilities dotted around the country.
