SLS Design Consultants Limited
Hazard Elimination and Risk Control
Design co-ordination is achieved by attendance at all design development meetings from as early a stage as possible and by ensuring that adequate and effective means of communication are established with all members of the design team at the outset. We recommend early involvement of the Contractor in order that their important contribution can be fed in to the design development process as soon as possible.
Regular attendance at all meetings from design to the site construction phase is essential, as is the need to ensure that Company representatives at the meetings are sufficiently experienced to make an active contribution to the design development and construction process.
It is essential that all such meetings allocate sufficient time for the discussion of Health and Safety matters, and that all discussions are accurately recorded.
All identified hazards are given detailed consideration in the context of the design development, with the aim of adopting different design approaches wherever feasible in order to eliminate the hazard in entirety if possible.
Where there is not a feasible alternative, or where a reduced residual risk exists, the risk severity is assessed and an appropriate means of notifying the affected organisation (contractor, client, end user) is adopted.
This process is recorded and monitored until such time as the Company no longer has any influence upon the hazard.
The majority of our operations are carried out in our own office environment, however, where site visits are required then personal protective equipment is made available to all employees and they are instructed that they must not enter any working site environment unless they are wearing high visibility jackets or vests, a hard hat, and safety footwear.
Similarly, all employees engaged in building investigation works are instructed that they must not damage, or cause to be damaged, any building components which could conceivably contain asbestos products, without first making reference to the premises asbestos register or to a specific asbestos survey report.
Risk evaluations are undertaken by the Project Design engineers working under the guidance and direct supervision of the Project Director. These engineers are typically members of a relevant professional institution and as such they are required to undertake CPD in accordance with their institution standards, and are regularly assessed in respect of same. This ensures that an adequate level of experience and expertise is brought to all projects.
The relevant experience of all designers undertaking risk assessments is regularly reviewed as part of the Company management process.
